Finding Freedom: An Interview with Jarvis Masters
What You'll Learn
We are incredibly honored to be joined by Jarvis Jay Masters, a Black Buddhist practitioner and author. Masters recorded this interview from San Quentin Prison, where he has been incarcerated for nearly 40 years. After being convicted in 1990 for a prison murder for which he has continuously maintained his innocence, Jarvis began practicing Buddhism with the guidance of a Tibetan teacher and has continued for the past 30 years on death row. Interviewed by Corny Koehl, producer of the Dear Governor Podcast about Jarvis’s case, he discusses the beginnings of his Buddhist practice, the doors that opened for him through learning to sit with himself, the ways he adapted Buddhist practice to connect compassionately with inmates and guards around him, the inspiration he takes from Black spiritual leaders, and much more. The recorded interview will be introduced by summit host Ayo Yetunde.

I tuned in for Jarvis Jay Masters talk, having read his biography and found his experience and wisdom indelible. It meant so much being able to feel his voice and the genuine compassion that informs his perspective. Thank you so much for providing this.

Dear Jarvish, Buddhist is one who learned and beyond the intellect, its a fantastic listening your recorded interview, “Finding Freedom” is my next mission to read and understand more the way you have define ‘Suffering’.
Powerful!
Thank you great event. I was first introduced to Mr Masters through an article in the late 90’s. I was teaching somatics and experiential anatomy at New College of California in San Francisco. i am not sure what magazine i found this article but in any event i was quite touched so i shared it in the somatics class. it turned out one of the members of the class was a prison guard at san quentin and knew Mr Masters and shared some touching stories about him. everyone in the class were quite touched by Mr Masters, his situation and his writing. thank you for this interview.
Hello from Victoria, BC Canada. I just want to say how filled with gratitude I am for this generous offering. Deep and humble bows to you and each of the presenters. Humility, knowledge and compassion – the trifecta!
Incredibly moving! A revelation – thank you
All of this is awesome and words can’t possibly describe the benefit and value that each presenter brings to the table. Each presentation has touched my heart in a particular way. The interview with Jarvis Jay Masters from San Quentin is a powerful testimony to the benefits of our buddhist practice.
If someone ever wanted an example of “Cause and Effect”, Mr. Masters is an example of it. He is a
Buddha who has tamed his own mind and continues to do so. He is the San Quentin Buddha. Thanks to all of you who did the work to bring this forward. Gassho! Deep Bows. Praise The Lord. Alleluiah.
I am so delighted to hear Jarvis Jay Masters talk about his relationship to Buddhism. I have known Jarvis thirty-five years. My close friend Melody Ermachild was the investigator on his case after he was convicted of fabricating the weapon used by two other inmates to kill a prison guard. The inmates who stabbed the guard were given Life in Prison without Parole; Jarvis was given the death penalty. I have been convinced of Jarvis’s innocence since I first heard his story; I started visiting him at San Quentin after I read “Finding Freedom” when it was first published. I haven’t seen him since Covid forced San Quentin to stop the visiting program. We talk on the phone occasionally. Thank you for including him in this beautiful Summit!
Thank you for inviting Jarvis.
I was so glad to hear the voice of freedom from prison.
I do appreciated his simple direct languages. You brought a fresh air.
I wish I would be alive to see you being out.
Much love

I do appreciate your request for other people so the could hear this summit.
First, thank you to the Black and Buddhist Summit for bringing these vital voices to the world. This summit has awakened a new awareness and compassion in me.
As a “conscious” white person,I have worked to help people, including myself, see all people, as people on the parh-wherever they find themselves. What has been missing for me—and I didn’t know it until now—is the profound impact of hearing the personal voices and experiences of those telling their stories. This is priceless. It’s the other side of the inner conversation I’ve been having with myself since I was 10 years old. i was beaten for announcing at the dinner table that my mother and father were not good Christians because of the way they talked about Negroes and Jews. Of course they were not changed by my criticism, but continued their hatefulness until the Catholic church started speaking about God’s love for all His creatures. Ok. Whatever it takes—and I didn’t say, “I told you so!” 😊
I look forward to tomorrow’s presentation.
This was extraordinary. Chills down my spine. So moved.

Thank you! It was truly amazing hearing this interview
Thank you for inviting Jarvis Jay Masters to participate in this conversation. I have gained so much from all the speakers in the Summit but I am left especially moved to my core by the compassion and wisdom expressed in this interview while around him the sounds of the oppressive system are audible. What grace.
Heartfelt thanks for your words of wisdom Jarvis Jay Masters, I’m humbled by your circumstance and life experience. I’m inspired to sit down and meditate. Sending you love ❤️.

Outstanding. Insightful. Thank you
Thank you very much. Love to all.
This was breathtaking. Thank you for including the voice of incarcerated Black Buddhists in this Summit–which Jarvis Jay Masters so beautifully represents in this interview. His writings have been deeply moving for many of us in the Buddhist community for many years, but to hear his actual voice in a recording underscores his humanity amidst the weight of his unimaginable circumstances–and perhaps our own. Deep gratitude for this gift. May all beings benefit.
This is an incredible summit altogether. My deepest thanks to you all for presenting it. Just as I think I have heard an insight expressed more profoundly than I have ever heard, I hear another one. May it be available always and shared with all so that others can have their ears and eyes further opened by others’ clear visions and vast realizations.
Hello everyone! _/\_ My name is Kodo. I’m a shoken student at the Zen Buddhist Temple of Toledo, studying with Rinsen Roshi and Do’on Osho. Our community read “Black and Buddhist” as part of our Fall Ango focus on racial justice in America. It’s been nourishing, inspiring and empowering to learn from the presenters at this summit. Thank you for hosting this event and making it free to attend.
So profound. Thank you so much.
This whole summit has been a blessing! Thank you to all of the speakers and organizers of this powerful event. I hope you will do it again next year!
